Lake Runs Red is another foray into the genre of the uninvited-guest-film. From the stills and trailers, it looks like the film will be setting a slasher’s kind of tension with the camera angles of film Noir and abrupt contrast in lighting from one scene to the next.
Melissa (Lauren Morris) and Lauren (Kaci Wegleitner), two college-aged women, are in the midst of studying for exams and decide to go to Lauren’s parents’ lake house (there’s something about lakes that just screams to horror fans and filmmakers: no one will hear the murder victims’ screaming).
The lake house is in the secluded north of Minnesota where a typical family dynamic soon establishes itself: Paul (Michael Hertenstein) is loving and happy to have Lauren (and Melissa) back while Gwen (Helene Donohue) is emotionally detached. She says, in the trailer, “Who’s Melissa? I didn’t know you were bringing a friend.” Maybe to satisfy the audience’s need for the despicable character to die soon, Gwen will die first.
Lake Runs Red is Jason Riesgraf’s first film, an independent film produced in Minnesota. It’s set to be released in 2016.
“I’m a huge proponent of practical special effects,” Jason Riesgraf said. “It’s important to do as much on camera as possible. “Lake Runs Red” will be heavily rooted in those classic effects with minimum use of visual effects.” Riesgraf is extraordinarily passionate about this film and talks more about it in his director’s statement.
